Make a Wish - The Astrid and Miyu Wishbone Necklace from JewelStreet

Asking me if I like jewellery is like asking Simon Cowell if he likes high-waisted trousers! So when JewelStreet got in touch to see if I fancied trying out their site and picking something shiny… I was all in!

I’ll fess up, I hadn’t actually heard of the online jewellery boutique until now and I was amazed by its enormity. With over 300 independent designers all in one place, it’s an amazing marketplace for jewellery designers, big and small to showcase their designs. There’s so much gorgeous stuff on there, I pretty much lost an afternoon and ended up with a lust-list as long as my arm. Don’t get me wrong, it’s an easy site to navigate, but with so much treasure, it’s easy to get distracted.

Eventually I picked out the beautiful Astrid and Miyu Wishbone Necklace £29. I’m a sucker for pretty gold necklaces and this one is such a striking piece. A delicate gold-plated chain with a shiny wishbone pendant – It’s cute, classic and very chic. It’s a very wearable piece that looks great layered with other chains, but just as pretty on its own. I love the length too, it sits perfectly just above the breast bone.

The New Whites by Nails inc - Whitehall and Swan Street

It's official, new whites are the new black. I'll keep this on a need to know basis, Nails Inc launched the 4-piece "The New Whites" collection. Soft, white based polishes with just enough colour to stop them from looking like tip ex. On paper, it shouldn't work it in reality they're sexy, cute & chic.
Swan Street, the minty pastel on the right, was my first, review here, but Whitehall caught my eye and I couldn't shake it off. Whitehall is a soft white with a hint of barely there peach. Big love for the new bottles? I wasn't sure at first but I'm well and truly loved up now, I think that's part of the reason I felt compelled to buy another... Don't they look cute as pair!? Back to the soft peach, I'd actually say it's a pinky peach pastel shade. A new take on white, it's not a bland, pretty, or even girly shade, it's cool and edgy and the white base has an illuminating, brightening effect - hands actually look more tanned, not washed out!

Formula wise, it's fairly opaque but did come out a little streaky. Most fingers needed a third coat. I'm thinking of popping back to nails inc to see what they do differently. When I had my manicure there using Swan Street the finish was perfect from two coats. The brush is amazing, the way it perfectly distributes the right amount of polish and holds on to the excess, it's extra wide too and fits the contours of my new-square-nails perfectly. Enriched with porcelain flower extract to strengthen nails, the formula it ultra glossy and seriously long lasting.

Clearly I'm hooked on The New Whites... 2 more to go, will I resist? RRP £14, save 10% on beauty at Debenhams this weekend

New Hair. New Hairdressers

By now you’ll probably know that I went for the chop. And I’m not talking my usual half inch trim, I’m talking a full and very brave 5-6 inches. Long locks be gone, I’m now sporting a choppy little LOB. But the main reason I’m sharing this with you is, I’VE FINALLY FOUND THE ONE! For years I’ve flitted from one hairdressers to another, never really settling on one, but always secretly hoping I’d one day find my perfect match. Well, it’s happened…

Say hello to House of Savannah. A stunning hair salon and spa, occupying a luxurious Georgian property in the heart of Newcastle. I was invited along to the launch evening to celebrate their new location late last year. Sadly I couldn’t make it but have wanted to try it ever since. So when I found myself in a bit of a hair rut, I decided now was the time. So here’s my hair problem, I love the colour, but my style, well, there was no style. Long, fine, flat and pretty boring. This is what I told the stylist Grace, during my consultation. Now this is the first thing that sets House of Savannah apart, they really take their time over the consultation. There was no rush to whiz me off to the basin, Grace made sure she knew exactly what I wanted and given that I didn’t really know what I wanted, that was some skill. We looked at some pictures, discussed my hair type – Grace has fine hair too so I knew I was in good hands and talked about how I like to wear it. I wanted to go shorter and I wanted some layers. It’s hard to get any oomph in the my hair, I felt sure layers would help, but whenever I ask hairdressers for layers they normally advise against it on account of my hair being too fine.

After the consultation I was asked if I wanted a head, neck and shoulder massage WITH AVEDA OILS – I’d have bit her hand off had she not needed it for the massage. That’s when I knew this was the one. I was pretty much in heaven and so chilled after the massage, she could have permed it and I wouldn’t have noticed. But she didn’t, instead off I went to the basins for a wash and another head massage before the chopping began. I love that Grace went straight in chopping the length – no dithering or “are you sures” – that’s exactly what I wanted, I needed a change and a change I got! You can see for the pictures there’s loads of blunt, choppy layers that create the illusion of thicker hair and it feels so much healthier. On to the styling – She used mousse! She used mousse and I didn’t even have to ask! This is a big deal for me because no one knows your hair better than you. I’ve tried everything to create body/volume/root lift and the only thing that ever really works is good old mousse. She styled it perfectly – a proper good blow dry with plenty of root lift and finished it off with some wand waves. It may sound cliché but I left the salon feeling all bad-ass Beyoncé styleee (Bow Down Bitches). I could hear my hair swishing as I flicked my head in a “look at me” kinda way.

As you can imagine, it has all the extras – stylish décor, complementary drinks, in-date magazine, there’s even an upstairs waiting room ideal for storing your men-folk – mine had a whale of a time sipping cappuccinos and reading magazines. All these little nice-to-haves add to the experience of course, but what you really want is a stylist you can trust and a cut you’re happy… head messages are just the cherry on the cake.

Wow, I didn’t intend for this to turn into an essay – as you can tell I’m thrilled with my new do but even more thrilled with finding a salon I feel at home in. I should also point out this is NOT a paid post, I wasn’t offered any extra discount of special treatment. I did however take advantage of the30% off for new clients offer. Cut and blow dry prices start at £33. If you fancy a change, I can't recommend it enough!

What'd you think of the chop? Have you tried found your perfect hairdressers?

Jeans: I've Found MY FIT

Nudie Skinny Lin Jeans £115 here

You know you've found your PERFECT fit when you want to buy them in every wash and throw away all your other jeans - something I'm seriously contemplating now I've discovered Nudie Skinny Lin. I don't need to remind any woman the perils of finding jeans that fit. We've all pounded the pavements in search of that holy grail. We've all got pairs in the wardrobe that we're still waiting to fit in to, or worse still, the pair that fit in the shop but stretched and we never wore again. That's why, when you find a fit that FITS, it's something to shout about.

Nudie are a brand my boyfriend has been wearing, and raving, about for years. Finally I decided to give them a go, and damn, he was right! I'm far from a skinny minnie - I love skinny jeans,  but don't have the skinny legs to go with them. So when I look for a skinny fit they need to fit the curves and pack a good stretch. Skinny Lin has a curved waistband which makes for a comfortable rise and an improved fit at the waist. They're slightly higher at the back and slightly lower at the front - which means they keep my muffin tops tucked in but don't look like 80s Mam jeans. They're a tight, skinny fit, top to bottom, and made with a power stretch meaning they go on easy and they stay comfy. When they arrived I couldn't believe how well they fit - almost made to measure.

The wash, called Juvenile Worn, is a sun-bleached style blonde indigo wash - we're talking 90s stylee... absolutely perfect for the summer... if it ever appears. Next up, I NEED to get them in black and then maybe the washed out grey. It's more than I'd normally like to spend on a pair of jeans, but when you find THAT FIT, it's worth paying a bit extra, especially when I know I'll wear them to death.

Jeans, have you found your fit?

The Most Natural Cream Blush YET

Sunlight//No light

There's nothing like cream blush for mimicking a healthy glow. I used to be a cream blush fiend but after MAC discontinued blushcremes (yup, still not over it) my love to for cream rouge waned... Then along came this beauty to reminded me just why I fell in love with cream blush in the first place.

bareMinerals Pop of Passion Blush Balm is a creamy, decadent blush that hydrates, nourishes and delivers a gorgeous pop of colour. It's like radiance in a tub, plumping the cheeks and delivering that much coverted post-exercise glow. The oil-balm formula melts into the skin instantly blending and imparting the most natural colour. The texture is creamy and light weight, balmy, but not sticky or tacky. Some people avoid cream blush because they think it's tricky to apply - it's not. You can dab this on with your finer tips like a lip balm - simples. Or pop on with a duo fibre or traditional blush brush. Check out my top cream blush tips here

The limited edition blush balms are available in three shades - Papaya Passion, Posy Passion, and this one, Natural Passion. Described as a 'sun washed rose', it's a dusky rose pink, not too dissimilar to MAC Desert Rose, which is my current favourite powder blush. It's fairly sheer, but very buildable, allowing you to create your custom look. No Aunt Sally cheeks here, unless you want them of course! The finish is glowing, dewy and unbelievably healthy.

Watch out for bareMinerals Pop of Passion Blush Balms £20 launching in June. What'd you think? Are you a cream blush fan?

The Charlotte Tilbury Lust Haves

Fact: Blogging is bad for the wallet! In the last year I’ve been practicing at the art of restraint, concentrating on the needs rather than the wants… then along came temptress Charlotte Tilbury with her tips, tricks and amazing new product line! I’ve been lusting after her products for a while now – a K.I.S.S.I.N.G Lipstick here, a eyeshadow palette there, but then the Met Ball pictures came out and now I.WANT.IT.ALL! It helps that they don’t stock Charlotte Tilbury products in Newcastle (yet) but I’m going to London next week and, I can deny myself no longer, IT’S GOING TO HAPPEN. So this is my current CT lust list but I’d love your thoughts and recommendations…

Filmstar Bronze and Glow £49
If I could have just one piece, this would be it. The secret to facial framework, Charlotte used this on all her clients at the Met Ball – Ellie Goulding, Poppy Delevingne, Hannah Davis Amal Clooney and they all looked perfectly sunkissed and glowing. I also REALLY want the powder sculpting brush £35 that goes with this.

Dolce Vita Luxury Palette £38

Another key item to crops up again and again. I asked Alice from Super Gorgeous, who works for Charlotte Tilbury and she said this was one of her top picks. Just look at the imagery that supports this collection… I wanna look like that!

ROCK 'N' KOHL Liner in Bedroom Black £19
This one’s Mossy’s fave. Nuff said.

K.I.S.S.I.N.G Lipstick £23
Don’t you love the names? And the old school luxe gold packaging, reminds me of the lipsticks my Mum had when I was a kid, think they were Estee Lauder? I’ve narrowed it down to Bitch Perfect, Hepburn Honey & Penelope Pink… now three need to become one because I’ll be living on the streets if I dare to bring home many more lipsticks.
Lip Cheat Pillow Talk £16
I saw Charlotte use this in this video tutorial and I was wowed. I’m not a massive lip liner devotee but this one’s rich and velvertty and has lips looking perfectly balanced and naturally plumped up… or so the bloggers tell me.

GODDESS SKIN CLAY MASK £45
THE red carpet secret weapon amongst A-listers in the know. This is what all the celebs use pre event to lift, smoothe, brighten & tighten skin. It’s basically a face lift in a tube – I’ll have a piece of that action!

Just need to find £225 to make my Charlotte Tilbury dreams come true. Have you tried Charlotte Tilbury products? Please share your lust haves/must haves/top picks.

But imagine these treatments include make overs and masterclasses from Armani, Tom Ford, YSL and treatments from Jo Malone, Aveda and Clarins. How.On.Earth.Do.You.Choose? A high-class problem to have I know, but a difficult one nonetheless. Fortunately two became four (no I wasn’t greedy, there was a surplus) and I was treated to these indulgent treatments...

Laura Mercier Foundation Make Over where they melted my makeup away with Purifying Cleansing Oil, prepped the skin with moisturiser and the mother of all primers. Foundation Primer, before applying the Silk Crème Photo Edition Foundation.
Armani Maestro Summer Make Over using the amazing Maestro Liquid Bronzer and the Maestro Mediterranean Blush both of which I fell in love and I came away from there looking like I'd been on holiday!
YSL where I was treat to a Touché Éclat complexion-over from the lovely Lucy. She applied the light infused Touché Éclat Blur Primer, Le Teint Touché Éclat foundation and make up artist fave Touché Éclat Blur Perfector ... plus I got to come away with my very own Touché Éclat.
Finally, a wonderful Jo Malone Hand and Arm Massage using products from the new and limited edition Blue Skies & Blossom range.

Bold Is Beautiful - Brow Raising Money For Charity

You know my motto - It's all about the brows! I don't say that lightly, I really am brow obsessed. I don't care what the rest of me looks like as long as my brows are on point/on fleek/brow game strong (or whatever the kids say these days). Understandably the thought of someones else touching le brows makes me very nervous and that's why I normally do them myself.  However, I've been on a major grow back mission since Christmas. I've been using a RapidBrow (pssst. IT WORKS, more on that soon I promise), imposed a tweezer ban and basically ended up looking like Sandy Cohen's love child. No bad thing, but I wanted to get a bit of shape back in there, and along comes #BoldisBeautiful

The Bold Is Beautiful project is Benefit's latest endeavour (remember Brow March) to raise money for women and girls. Throughout the month of May Benefit will donate 100% of the profits from brow waxes to two very worthwhile charities - Refuge, empowering women and children who experience domestic violence and Look Good Feel Better, helping women and teenagers with the visible side-effects of cancer treatment. Pop along to your nearest brow bar for a Benefit brow-over, as well as supporting the charities, you'll also be rewarded with an amazing freebie - a full size Gimme Brow worth £18.50 (see my review here).

So, I womaned up and went along for my brow wax at my local Boots. Not to over dramatise things but I'd had a negative experience with a Benefit's Brow Bar in the past (I was scalped, it wasn't pretty) and was slightly nervous letting them loose on my arches again. But they did a brilliant job - I'm so happy with the results. I told the girl I didn't want to lose much of the thickness, I just needed some help with the shape. She waxed away the wild stragglers - I wasn't joking about the tweezer ban, and set about putting in some shape. She took my arches higher, adding a slight point and trimmed the bushy bulbous. I have really thick, course hairs with massive roots so I get pretty red and sore afterwards. Last time around I also got some nasty pimples so I decided to forgoe concealer and just have a little aloe vera gel. It meant I had to walk home with a very red face but it did the job and my skin's healed quickly. It's amazing the effect brows have on the face. This re-shaped has been like a mini face lift for me - I'm so pleased I took advantage of the Bold is Beautiful campaign - who knew your arches could support women and children!

#BoldIsBeautiful Have you been for yours?

The Does it all Concealer & Highlighter

It's not often I get excited about concealer. As far as make up goes, it' one of the least glamorous pieces - functional, yes, exciting, not-so-much! But that was before I discovered Stroke of Light Eye Brightener...

I'm kinda crushing on bareMinerals right now. Ever since I went along to a live demo and subsequent make over I've made all kinds of new discoveries from a brand I've previously overlooked. One of the most stand out products so far is Stroke of Light Eye Brightener £22. This one really does do it all. Conceals dark circles, hides imperfections, highlights skin and even covers blemishes. It's amazing under the eye, seriously improving the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, and the best thing is, it doesn't sit in them. The texture is so dreamy, it's creamy but not thick or cakey. It feels lightweight but packs decent coverage and doesn't set or dry out, which is so important to me. People rave about Nars creamy concealer, but for me, that one does set and dries a little... especially under the eye area. The eye area is so delicate and sacred, you have to use a concealer you can trust and that's the best thing about bareMinerals... It's doing good whilst it's looking good! It's also an amazing highlighter if you're doing the full contour/highlight (apparently Kim K is a fan). It catches the light wonderfully and has a magic blurring effect, air brushing imperfections for a flawless finish. It's so good, I'm happy to forgo foundation and just use this (as per the pic above) when I need just to hide the imperfections and go.

Stroke of Light comes in four shades, i'm wearing Luminous 02 which has a light yellow undertone making it the ideal antidote for blue/purple toned eye bags. It's similar to MAC Prep & Prime Highlighter, one of my all time fave highlighters, but this is less yellow and slightly thicker and more creamy, lending itself as a concealer and highlighter.

Stroke of Light Eye Brightener £22 Luminous, light reflecting and blends to perfection! What's your favourite concealer/highlighter?

*p.s. excuse the brows... this was pre-wax.

The I haven't done a favourites for absolutely ages favourites. I really admire bloggers that muster up favourites post every month. I mean to, but I'm just not that disciplined. Here's a collection of my latest loves and can't-be-withouts...

bareMinerals Smoothing Face Brush £24 here

Come to mama! I saw this brush at the Complexsion Rescue launch and couldn't take my hands off it. Seriously the girls had to watch me in case it accidentally (on purpose) fell in my handbag. It's become my does-it-all brush over the last few weeks - great for foundation, concealer, cream blush, liquid bronze. Okay, it clearly deserves its own post so I'll not say much else... Except I didn't steal it. I bought it legitimately.

Liz Earle Cleanse & Polish Rose & Lavender (Available in the Cleanse & Polish trio)

So they took my favourite cleanser and made it even more yummy! To my knowledge Liz has only made 3 Limited Edition cleansers... And this was the only one I hadn't laid my hands on so when it was relaunched to celebrate Liz Earle's 20th anniversary I had to try it. It's every bit as good as the traditional cleanser (full review here) but it has amazingly intoxicating lavender and rose aromas. Perfect in be evening or in the bath when you've got time to breathe the goodness in... And relax! It's such a shame this is limited edition.

Gillette Venus Snap Portable Razor £9.99 3 for 2 Boots

This is genius! A bit like suitcases on wheels, I wonder why it took so long to invent this? A full size Venus head on a short handled razor, all contained in diddy little case... Perfect for travelling. No more reaching into my toiletry bag and getting a nasty scratch.

Nails Inc The New White £14 here

Sick of me going on about these yet? But they have pretty much been on rotation on my nails for the last two months. Soft, white based polishes with pretty pastel tints... perfectly summery!

bareMinerals Stroke of Light Eye Brightener £22 here

bareMinerals you're killing me! My new go-to does-it-all concealer. Makes for a beautiful, air brushed like complexion, full review here.

    Benefit Curl Power £19.50 here

Bin the eyelash curlers because this one does it all. It curls, it lifts, it lengthens and it boosts. I'm still a huge fan of They're Real, but there are times when I don't want all out volume. This one's my go-to when I want sexy, glossy, curves. Review here

La Roche Posey £4.50 each, 3 for 2 Boots here

A damn good hand cream for a damn good price! I picked this up in Paris (remember my City Pharma Haul) and it's since gained a coveted position on my bed-side table. I slather this one every night, it's light-weight, fast absorbing, non-greasy and extremely moisturising.

Anastasia Beverly Hills Brow Wiz £15.50 here

Confession time, I've been holding out on you. This has more or less replaced dipbrow as my brow go-to and I forgot to tell you... sorry. It's an ultra fine, twisty up brow pencil that mimics natural brow hair and fills in the sparse patches. Fuss free and super quick - it's shaved minutes of my morning routine.

Okay, so now I've remembered why I don't do a monthly favourites... IT TAKES SO LONG! Hope you've seen some products you like? Let me know what you've been loving lately.

I've been using a new Cleanser... and it's not Liz Earle

Ssssshh! Don’t tell Liz, but I’ve been cheating on her. You know I’m a big devotee of Cleanse & Polish, but when I got the opportunity to try the winner of the “best natural cleanser” accolade at the Natural Health Beauty Awards, I strayed. As much as I love the whole Cleanse & Polish experience, sometimes I don’t have the time for a mini facial – especially on a work morning when I’ve hit the snooze button one too many times. Cue Ole Henriksen African Red Tea foaming cleanser* for a quick fix…

This luxurious foaming cleanser is enriched with anti-aging botanical extracts including antioxidant-rich African red tea and Vitamin C – so it smells divine – fresh and citrusy and is very refreshing. Ideal in the mornings when you need a little help waking up. One pump works up a good ol’ lather (despite containing zero sulfates – yeah) and serves the whole face. It’s strong enough to remove makeup, but gentle enough for even the most sensitive skins. My skin it pretty normal these days – not overly dry, not oily. I give Liz props for that! I worry that using other products will mess with the status quo, but this one actually has a very balancing effect. It leaves my skin feeling squeaky clean. Not tight but glowing.

You know what, sometimes it’s good to mix it up. For me this one’s great for the summer months when my skin is less dry and in need of something a little less rich. It’s also fab in the morning – pump and go with a refreshing citrus tang.

This 45ml bottle costs just £6, a great way to test the water, the full size 207ml bottle retails for £26. Check out Debenham's current promotion - buy two Ole Henriksen products and receive this cleanser FREE

What did we do before Real Techniques?

Just taking a moment here to appreciate Real Techniques. Sam, Nic... big up ya bad selves! I own a lot of RT brushes, use at least one (okay five) every day but for some reason, haven't given them the air time they deserve. What did we do before Real Techniques? At that price point any price point, you'll be hard pushed to find a better brush brand. The quality, design, results... they're faultless. Who doesn't have an RT in their stash?

    If there's one area not quite serviced in my brush stash, it's a highlighting brush. I tend to either use a blush brush or my Real Techniques Contour Brush, but if I've just been contouring with it, it can look a bit muddy... and a muddy highlight is no highlight at all! So my plan was to get the RT Setting brush £6.99 and make it a designated highlight brush, but this week Superdrug were flogging the three piece sculpting set, which includes the setting brush plus two bonus brushes, for just £12.99 (normally £20.99). The set contains;

The Sculpting Brush - The softness of this brush, you have to feel it to believe it! Medium sized brush head cut to an angle that perfect fits into the contours of the face. Soft but firm bristles that can be used for both liquid and powder contouring.

The Fan Brush - a super soft, small fan brush that softly sweeps on powders and whisks away any excess makeup for an even finish.

The Setting Brush- small and perfectly domed - perfect for a controlled dusting of powder or highlighter.

Like i said, what did we do before Real Techniques? Oh yeah, I remember... we applied badly. This set contains everything you need to effortlessly and seamlessly highlight and contour. Ultra high quality synthetic (cruelty free) bristles for pixel perfect results every time. Chapman sisters, I WORSHIP YOU!

Sadly the shamazing Superdrug offer has expired but you can pick the same set up on eBay for £13.95.

Brushing Up My Skills at The London Make Up School

It’s no secret, make up is my passion. When I look back to my early days, it always was. I was the girl in school everyone would come to for make up tips, the one dishing out the mascaras and Heather Shimmer lipstick. I didn’t realise it at time, but I’ve been doing tutorials since I was 14. Whenever I applied make up – sleepovers, nights out, school, college, uni – everyone would stop still and watch. I could kick myself for now pursuing a career in make up back then. Still, you live and learn and it’s never too late!

These days beauty is so accessible. We can learn so much through blogs, vlogs, videos, magazine but I wanted to get some more formal training from the real experts. Sadly being a Northern gal it’s not easy finding good quality make up artist courses. I’ve been to some really bad ones in the past, not naming any names but basic skills with substandard products, this time, I wanted the real deal. So to London I looked for the gold standard. There’s no shortage of makeup/beauty schools in the capital. I did my research and The London Make Up School really stood out.

London Make Up School is one of London’s most progressive and well recognised beauty schools. Their course catalogue is huge with everything from basic make up to Avant Guard and the school caters for beginners to advanced pros and everything in between. If time and funds were no object, I’d work my way through the entire catalogue, but for now I decided to go with the Intermediate Bridal Make up Course.

It’s a professional two full day intensive make up course designed for make up artists that want to add to their skills. The course was delivered by the lovely Ana Ospina, who’s been working in the industry for over 20 years and specialises in bridal work. The course was incredibly intensive with so much crammed into two days, which was ideal for me – maximum learning/minimum time. The class size was really small – just three of us, which meant lots of time and attention from the tutor and the ability to learn from each other. We started off with a bit of theory going through the role of bridal make up artists, preparation and skincare but most of the class was hands on. Ana did some demonstrations and off we went creating looks on our models. We created a number of bridal looks – pretty in pink, vintage red lips and flicks as well as classic mother of the bride and bridesmaid looks. We learnt how to colour match foundations, correct and balance skin tone, contour, apply false lashes and perfect winged liner -  well try!

I learnt so much in such a short period of time, it was reassuring to know I was already doing a lot of things right, but there was plenty of tips and tricks of the trade I didn’t know and you never stop learning. All MUAs have their own style and it was great to see how other people do things. Working on real life models in invaluable too. I’ve been on courses where you work on yourself or partner up and work on each other, but then you’re really only getting half of the tuition and learning, the other half you’re modelling. The quality of the products was ah-maz-ing! It was like being let loose in the beauty hall – MAC, Laura Mercier, Bobbi Brown, Illamasqua, I came away with a wish-list as long as my arm (actually both arms put together). Star products include...

Laura Mercier Photo Edition Foundation - this worked wonderfully on the models and true to its name, photographed perfectly.
MAC Pro Longwear Paint Pots - creamy eye colour that provides the most amazing base. Shadow does NOT budge!
MAC Ruby Woo - it really does suit everyone.
Illamaqua Gleam Highlighter Aurora - creamy highlighter that added the prettiest pearlescent finish.
MAC Prep & Prime Finishing Powder - set the look perfectly with zero flash back.
Laura Mercier High Coverage Concealer - Powerful but not cakey. Amazing for concealing and brightening the under eye area.

As superficial as it may be, the location of London Make Up School was a real plus. Situated in the heart of Shoreditch it has a cool vibe, it’s close to the tube and is surrounded by great cafes/restaurants/bars. I’d be lying if I said I didn’t enjoy popping into Shoreditch Grind or The Breakfast Club en route.

I loved my time at The London Make Up School - just wish it hadn't gone so fast. It's fuelled my passion and increased my confidence. If you’re looking to advance your skills, regardless of your starting point, I'd definitely recommend it. Check out the courses here pssst.... there's still time to take advantage of the 15% off summer sale ending soon.

RapidBrow: This sh*t works… It actually works!

The eyebrow saviour. The game changer. The “that’s never going to work but hold on, it only freakin’ does”. This little wonder has actually restored my brows to their resplendently bushy former-selves!

Okay, calm down and back up a little. You know the story – girl has big brows, girls plucks big brows (actually near scalps herself), brows don’t grow back, girl spends rest of life filling in with pencil, powder, gel – familiar story? I’ve seen a few brow serums kicking around and thought, honestly – do these things ever actually work? Then I watched a Lisa Eldridge video (the one with Alexa Chung). Alexa was expressing similar brow woes and Lisa suggested using a brow serum – Lisa seal approval, time.to.try! I did the research and of all the brow serums on the market, RapidBrow had the best reviews.

RapidBrow is a high performance eyebrow enhancing serum formulated with Hexatein 2 Complex, a blend of fortifying proteins, stimulating peptides and nourishing ingredients which is clinically proven to help improve the appearance of eyebrow density in as little as 60 days.

I started using RapidBrow on 16th January 2015. It couldn’t be easier to use – swipe the spooly style brush through your brows morning and night. Forget 60 days, I noticed results after two weeks. Brow hairs started popping up in places I haven’t seen hairs in years. By 60 days my brows were almost fully restored to their former glory. They key is, step away from the tweezers. We all know grow back is a bitch. Sadly there’s no uniformed pattern, you have no control over how the brows grow back. For me, the hairs that came back first were the ones furthest away from my current arches, to the point it almost looked like double brow. As desperate as I was to pluck, I persevered, and eventually the two did meet. By the beginning of May I had full bushy madness. Everywhere I went people were noticing my brows! It’s one thing when you notice the difference, it’s a whole other level of satisfaction when people you barely know notice. Due to the self-imposed tweezer ban and way wood hairs, I had zero brow shape left. I decided to brave a Benefit brow wax (details here) to help restore some shape and whilst, inevitably I had to lose some of my new hairs, the thickness remained and the shape was perfect. The top pic shows the before an after on my bare brows, this pic shows the before and after filled in. The after shot is post brow wax...

I pretty much stopped using RapidBrow in early May, since then I’ve been using what’s left to spot-treat the tiny bald patches that remain, mainly on my right brow. Some stubborn hairs will likely never return and my left brow is fuller than my right, but I am blow away by the results. I still fill my brows in a little – to even out the arches and enhance the shape, but far less than I used to. My brows are thicker – they look thicker, they feel thicker, bald patches have been filled in, they even look darker, I guess that’s because there’s more of them. I’m elated – hello first time I’ve said that on the blog. RapidBrow is probably my greatest beauty discovery.

I bought my RapidBrow from Boots £37, but I've since found it on Amazon for £29.60 and All Beauty for £31.95. Now buy it! If you want your brows back, buy it!

    Favourie Lip Combo

I do love a good lip combo. For a while there it was lip gloss OR lipstick and for a long time lip liner was off the menu but now, we’re all in. This is my current favourite every day combo recycling some oldies but goodies….

No7 Precision Lip Pencil Nude £6.95Boots– a classic my-lips-but-better nude. I picked this up ages ago on a Lisa Eldridge recommendation – thanks Lise. It glides on with ease and provides the perfect base for applying any lip colour. Line the entire lips area for a more natural and long lasting look.

MAC Lipstick Hue £15.50(£13.95 10% off Debenhams) is a perfect soft pinky nude. I love the shade, but the formula, not so much. It’s a lustre finish (semi-sheer, moisturising) which is usually fine, but this one tends to be more on the dry side on me and “sits” in the cracks. That’s why it’s ideal to pair with a liner, gloss or BOTH for maximum lusciousness.

Bobbi Brown Lip Gloss Buff £18.50(£16.65 10% off Debenhams) A MLBB gloss. This ties the lip look together perfectly. Non-sticky, semi-sheer with a hint of rosey pink colour, it provides a pretty sheen and creates a fuller look… pout ready!

If you’re not sold on the combo thing – too much effort for everyday? I hear ya! BUT by lining the lips first your lipstick will last a hella lot longer and even when the lip gloss fades, there’s still plenty colour under there.

Lip combos, yeh or nay? What’s your favourite?

The Iver Academy and becoming Brigitte Bardot

Last week I found myself at the legendary Iver Academy, being made into my screen idol Brigitte Bardot by hands that have touched Kate Moss and David Beckham… PINCH ME!

The Iver Academy is a professional hair and make-up school based at the legendary Pinewood Studios – they filmed James Bond, Pirates of the Caribbean and Star Wars there don’t you know. The academy offers aspiring make-up and hair artists the best training in the TV, film, theatre and fashion from industry experts – we’re talking BAFTA and Emmy awards winning tutors with over 20 years in the business. If you want to work in film, TV, fashion… The Iver Academy is the gold standard in training.

I was fortunate enough to be invited to The Iver Academy blogger open day last week at renowned Greasepaint studios where the tutors have taught for the last 20 years – sadly Greasepaint is closing down and the tutors are upping sticks, well make up brushes, and heading to Pinewood. I was given the opportunity to be made up as one of my favourite TV/film characters and witness first-hand professional make up artistry in action. First of all, how difficult was it choosing ONE favourite character or look! I went through them all – Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman, Sharon Stone in Casino, Angelina Jolie in Maleficent, Elizabeth Taylor in, well anything… and then it hit me, Brigitte Bardot. The iconic sexy-sixties-siren, I’ve always been obsessed with her look (check my Pinterest) and it was one, with the right tuition, I hoped I could replicate.

I hit the jackpot again when I was paired with Academic Consultant Christine Vidler to create my chosen look. Despite refusing to name drop – I tried, I tried, good old Google informs me she’s worked on anyone who’s anyone - Kate Moss, David Beckham, Halle Berry, George Clooney… if she touched my lips and their lips does that mean I’ve kissed Becks? Christine is a genius. She know exactly what I wanted – 60s Bardot with a Ginger from Casino flavour and despite the fact I’ve had my long mane chopped (she didn’t know that until I got there) she transformed me into this…..

Key to creating this looks is big, BIG hair. Which on me, is a tad challenging since I have neither the volume nor the length. Christine and the team matched my hair to a long hair piece, which was taken off to be styled whilst they worked on what I’ve got. Lashings of setting spray, heated rollers, backcombing and enough hairspray to kill the ozone layer and voile – I had volume! I looked a bit like Tina Turber but I had real volume. Once curled, she fit the piece into my crown, blended into my natural hair and added a 60s bouffant. It looked amazing – surprisingly natural and I instantly loved my new mermaid tresses.

Brigitte Bardot’s trademark make up is all about the sexy 60s eyes - strong crease, cute flicks and BIG lashes. Eyeshadow is used to create a more defined crease – no blending or fading here, just wiper blade motions to create a defined arch. Christine created the perfect cat flicks using Bobbi Brown gel liner (of course) and gave me some tips for getting it right on myself – no need to attempt to draw one perfect line, mark where you want the flick to end and carefully work up to it. What I lack in head hair I make up on the lash front, so I didn’t technically need the false lashes but in the spirit of on-screen makeup we went with it for maximum effect. I’m normally not a fan of false lashes but Christine applied them so expertly I wouldn’t have even known I was wearing them. I tried my best to note down the products used, it’s not fully exhausting but between watching Christine’s every move and admiring my new long tresses I was a bit distracted….

Bobbi Brown - Hydrating Gel Cream
Bobbi Brown – CC Cream Warm Nude
By Terry – Cover Expert Perfecting Fluid Foundation, mix of 8 and 10.
Laura Mercier – Translucent Loose Setting Powder
MAC – Mixture bronze and grey eyeshadows applied only in the crease
    Bobbi Brown – Gel Liner
    Eyelure – Lashes
    Benefit – They’re Real Mascara
Bobbi Brown – Lipsticks Nude and Guava

THE NEW YSL FALSE LASH EFFECT MASCARA

This might surprise you but I don’t own, have never owned a YSL mascara. That was until a couple of weeks ago when I attended a YSL masterclass with international make-up artist Fred Letailleur and saw one in action. Amongst many of the products I fell for on the day (Blur Perfector, Blur Primer, Full Metal Shadow) Volume Effet Faux Cils Mascara caught my eye… no pun intended!

If you’ve used it before and didn’t like it or heard on the blog-vine it’s clumpy, well listen up… it’s recently been reformulated. The unique triple-film complex remains unchanged – a coating film for intensity, a conditioning film for curve, a fixing film for long-lasting effectiveness. But the supped up version is now enriched with four sensuous oils that leave lashes more flexible, lengthened and feel more durably supple.

Can we just take a moment to admire the gold casing, I know it shouldn’t matter but it kinda does – how chic, how gorgeous! Definitely one to leave on show on the make up table. This mascara is a really good all-rounder – it’s got volume, length, curl and definition in equal, and abundant, measures. It works fast, one coat does the job and the formula is intensely black – we’re talking black BLACK and seductively glossy - notice a little blue flash in the picture above? That's the liner, not the mascara, but it shows you the contrast of the blue and High Density Black. For a false lash effect mascara, it’s not the most maxed out volume I’ve ever experienced (le Volume de Chanel, you’re safe) but it does a good job fanning, defining and fattening the lashes. Plus you can always up the ante with an extra coat or two but I was happy with the results. The wand is long, sturdy and straight - no fiddly, bendy carry on here and has what seems to me, a ma-hoosive brush head. It almost covers the whole lash line with one stroke, which is great when times against you.

It stays in place all day with zero smudging – I wore it to Zumba to put it through its paces, it passed with flying colours and, for me, the real acid test… it washes off easily with my trusted Cleanse & Polish – no panda eyes or fibre fall out, which I hate. Oh and it also has a lovely scent, I was sniffing the wand, what is it? I don’t know but it’s nice.

My first YSL mascara gets a good 8/10 from me.. What's your favourite mascara?

Birchbox Blip or Beauty Box Boredom?

It's not my style to go trash talking a brand... But I'm really disappointed with Birchbox lately. Last month's box was such a let down.. That when this month's box landed, I didn't open it for 2 days... A sign that beauty box boredom has set in? Or simply a Birchbox blip?

Since making the switch from Glossybox (I mean, that got BAD) to Birchbox back in June 2014, I've been really impressed by the quality and more importantly the consistency of the brand. As with any beauty box subscription there's always the odd product where u think meh, but on the whole, box after box, birch has pleased. Until May's box...

Caudalie Vinoperfect Radiance Tinted Moisturiser | £27

I would have been so happy with this, BIG Caudalie fan, BUT they sent me LIGHT. I'm not light! They (beauty box providers) make a fuss about updating your profiles, I do it, tell them i'm medium-tanned.. they send me light! Insert angry face here.

Wah London Press on Nails Full Size | £7

Are you kidding me with these? I'm not Sandra from Gogglebox! Yellow/turquoise/black stripey nails... come on!

Parlour by Jeff Chastain Sea Salt Spray | £17 (not pictured)

I told a lie earlier, I did take something out of the box - this sea salt spray. In my quest for bigger, more texturised hair, a sea salt spray comes in handy... sadly this one made my mane greasy. THUMBS DOWN.

Jelly Pong Pong Caribbean Sun Bronzer Duo in Martinique | £15.95

Okay, getting better, Who doesn't love a blusher/bronzer duo? But, and I'm honestly tired of saying that word, it's a bit teenie, I struggle to get a brush in it and it's a tad too sparkly for my likes.

Absolution Youth Activator Mask Sachet | £29

Face masks always come in handy, so I was happy enough to see this.

    BONUS items...

Number 4 Lumber d'hived reconstruction masque and a pack of colouring pencils.... to colour in your box... I'm not five!

Such a bad box, not one product I'm interested in. It actually sat there all month until June's box dropped. And when it did, gone was the usual excitement and anticipation, I simply let it sit in the pile of post. June's box marks a collaboration with French Sole, with three stylish boxes and shoe bags to choose from. I chose the signature Parisian bretton stripe box, but got this one instead...

English Laundry no7 for her Perfume Sample

Props to Birchbox they don't do this very often, but when I receive a perfume sample as one of my five, I can't help but feel a bit short changed.

Yes To Cucumbers Facial Wipes | £4.99

Always handy and with cucumber, aloe vera and green tea, promises to be refreshing!

Balance Me Body Wash | £9

I'm building up quite the collection of Balance Me products (me thinks Birchbox has secured a good deal)... just as well I like them.

    Beauty Protector Protect & Oil | £16

Lightweight hair oil, glossy locks - blah, blah, BLAH! Very few people with flat, fine hair like hair oils and if they do, they use so little that one bottle will probably last a life time. I hate them! I don't use them and now I have 6!

Mirenesse iCurl Secret Weapon Mascara | £24

I haven't heard of this brand, but it looks like a substantial enough mascara. Will give it a whirl and report back.

    BONUS items...

Temporary Metallic Tattoos - I'll refer you to my earlier statement, i'm not five and French Sole Shoe Bag - in a pattern I didn't pick!

June's box, slightly better than May's, but still only a couple of products I'll use and none I'm excited about.

I look up at the ten or so products in front of me and I think, whatta pile a crap. Most of this I'll give away to friends/family - great for them, but pretty wasteful. It comes down to that quality/quantity debate. Is it better to have one or two products you really want than ten things you don't want/need/use. So what's the solution? Ditch Birchbox, try another or sack subscription boxes all together? I feel like I need to give Birchbox a chance to redeem itself - but if they hit a hatrick, they're getting cut! Maybe the bottom has fallen out of the beauty box subscription market. I don't know about you, but I'm feeling a bit sampled out?! I think the future lies with the one off beauty boxes - Glamour for Latest in Beauty, Tatler for Birchbox, that kind of thing. That way you're in control of what you're getting and when you're getting it!

Phew, rant over! I'd love to hear your thoughts. Are you a beauty box subscription fan? Are you feeling sampled out? Or do you still get kicks from the surprise?

    Beauty Storage on the Move

My static beauty storage needs are taken care of, I’m still pretty happy with my Ikea Hemnes dresser and acrylic Muji Drawers but when it comes to beauty on the move… I didn’t know where to begin. Now that I’m doing a bit of freelance make up I need to be able to take my stash with me, and a Cath Kidston wash bag ain’t gonna cut it.

In an ideal world (when I’m a fully-fledged MUA and whizzing around all over the place *I hope) I’d have one of those zuca trolley cases with the MAC Pro Travel Case neatly slotted on top but for now I wanted an affordable mobile solution that allows me to transport a good stash of products (in an organised manor, of course).

After a lot of research – you know me, nothing left to chance – I went for the San Remo Beauty Box from Amazon £41.99. This is an ideal storage solution for Make up artists, mobile hairdressers, beauty therapists or any one with way more make up than one person should own! I am REALLY happy with the quality of this box. It looks professional, sleek and stylish! It’s incredibly strong and robust with sturdy, smooth hinges and handle. It’s light-weight yet has enough space to hold all of this…

The toolbox style case is lockable and opens up to reveal three trays – one deep, two shallow. Slide them to the side and you’ve got a really large, deep, freestyle compartment where you can store bigger/bulkier items or insert your own dividers to organise to suit YOUR needs. That was the appeal with the San Remo, I have a LOT of palettes and needed a deep compartment to stack em’. Rather handily it also fits my brush roll on top of the trays and the doors still close. I wish I could say it stores all of my make up – it doesn’t but that’s because I have too much. As I continue, okay, start to declutter and down size I’d expect one day soon it will store all my stash. It would also be a really good solution for anyone that doesn’t have to luxury (or desire) to store their beauty wares on show and wants an organised solution they can store out of sight. That’s another thing I love about it, when it’s not in use it slides neatly into the bottom of my wardrobe, unlike the trolley cases which are pretty bulky.

Let’s talk weight – empty, it weighs just 3.4kgs, but when you start to fill it with lotions and potions, it gains weight and fast. This probably isn’t ideal for traveling around on buses and tubes, but for throwing in the car or building up the biceps, it’s perfect. Also, how much fun did I have merchandising it!
